Setting up SMB share with no volume sets...

I have a customer for whom we installed FreeNAS on an existing server with a hardware RAID controller. As such, the OS only sees a single large volume. For our purposes, this is just fine. However, I don't seem to be able to specify the path to an SMB share without a dataset present. Can I create an SMB share with a path to some location on the main volume?
