Self-Test Log error count increased (SMART result)

Hi

I have two FreeNAS servers running both with 4 * 2TB WD Red.
These or running on HP Microservers for home use.

Both the disks are out of the three-year warranty 1 by 6 months and the other by 9 months

Both have reported:
Self-Test Log error count increased

/dev/ada2 on one setup
/dev/ada3 on the other setup

Below are the outputs on both the drives

smartctl -x /dev/ada3
smartctl -x /dev/ada2

from reading the forum this could indicate a disk failing or just potentially a fault reading a sector which could be fixed by a resilver

Can anyone offer a more knowledgable assessment, I have done a resilver before by replacing a failed disk but how would I start a resilver without replacing the disk?

Hello,

First could please edit your message and put the SMART result in the code tags, that would improve readability... thanks.

Besides of the short test issue, the SMART data looks good.
But smething got my attention: those drives never performed long tests (and ada3 a short test only once!).
So you should perform long tests on these drives (and also make sure the long tests are planned in for the other drives).

I'd say, perform the long test and see what comes out...

Depending on the result, I would:
- rerun the short tests if the long tests are ok
- closely monitor the disks to see if it degrades in time or not (that is also depending on the data stored on the volume, its criticality, if backups are available, the RAIDz used, ...)
- run several passes of badblocks on those disks and watch the outcome
- eventually change the drives if too many errors occur
- if one is your backup server and the other the main server, I'd swap some drives so that on the main server all drives are healthy, so no stress on the data and then work on the backup server

Changed to make it slightly more readable

I have scheduled in a LONG test for all drives on both servers tonight and will check the results

I will complete a Badblocks check also

By the way, to do a resilver without changing a disk, just do a scrub.
(and they should be planned regularly also)
You could run one and check that there are no checksum errors, just to be sure...
