Hi Guys

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this issue I am having.

My setup is:

FreeNAS 9.3 - Stable - 201506292130
Asus Sabertooth 990fx
AMD 8150 Processor
32 GB ECC Kingston Memory

2 TB Mirror WD Red
3TB Mirror WD Red
4 TB Mirror WD Red

2 x 4 Port PCI Express SATA III RAID Card - Star Tech

I installed Freenas a short while ago, and left the machine off. I turned it on recently, and its coming up with the above error upon boot up.

I have run long tests on all my drives, and a fair few short tests. All without problems. The error will not go away, and will only go green after I un-check the alert.

The server is not in production yet, as there is no rush, but I would like to get this annoying error away. I just wanted to double check this problem before I do.

Should I run WD Tools on the drive or will WD accept smartctl for returns?

The short tests appear to have been recently changed to daily from hourly, but there isn't any indication of long tests having been run (I guess they might have scrolled off the bottom of the list--I'm not sure how many entries the SMART test log keeps). The problem here, though, is that ada0 failed the overall health self-assessment without any obvious errors indicating why.

@Dextros, if you can return the drive to your vendor, I'd try that--you should get a new drive as a replacement that way. If you send it back to WD, you'll likely get a "refurbished" drive instead, and I don't think I trust those very much. The failure mode is atypical, but ada0 definitely appears to be failing.

Hi guys

Yes I changed the frequency due to not intentionally letting them run every hour.

I had initially done a long test, but it has scrolled off from the list, but from memory it completed without errors.

Its in the process of doing a long test now, and should be completed in about 2 more hours. I will post the results.

I will however start the RMA process from Ebuyer now.

Should i still go through with the RMA, as its probably not worth taking the risk that there is something wrong.

Can you update HDD firmwares?
In practice, no.

Should i still go through with the RMA, as its probably not worth taking the risk that there is something wrong.
The drive is still not working properly, so yeah. It's not like it's an obscure model that needs a tweak, WD Reds are widespread.
