Just seeking some wisdom. I have used FreeNas/TrueNas personally for a few years. I also have a few years experience with Windows Server 2016/19. Just never used both together. I have been tasked to build a new domain controller for my work as well a backup solution. What is the best way to integrate these two servers together?

a) Windows Server with iscsi from TrueNas controlling shares through Windows?

b) TrueNas connected to DC through Directory Services tab. TrueNas hosts shares with permissions controlled through Truenas Gui?

c) TrueNas as samba server controlling permissions through Windows Gui?

Hopefully these questions don't sound to noobish. Just hoping somone else has been successful setting this up.

At my previous work I set it up as Windows Server as a VM with iSCSI from the SAN (we used Nimble).
Scheduled snapshots on the Nimble for fast recovery.
Then used Veeam to backup the VM to a repository, copied the repository offsite, and scheduled to tape.

This keeps all Windows/Microsoft in windows (AD, DC, ACL, etc.) and the storage is just storage.
Keeping it as a VM means better use of host hardware and being able to backup the entire unit as a VM.

This should be able to be done with TrueNAS easily enough.
