Just, ships from China, not sold by newegg just through them from another seller.

Does that mean it is possibly shady?

It means its going to take longer. I can't speak to the authenticity of the products from that seller. I've never purchased from them.

I literally just bought hard drives on newegg within the past hour, I specifically went with 18tb exos from newegg directly, instead of choosing a reseller I wasn't familiar with. I don't want to deal with any hassle if there is a problem. The drives in my system currently are also seagate drives I purchased from newegg may of 2019. I've had 4yrs and no problems, just sticking with what I have experience with myself.

On occasion it happens:
  • The drives are not Seagate, they're in-house drives with cloned firmware running on in-house boards with a very nice Seagate sticker they printed in-house stuck to the outside. But they are new.
  • The drives are Seagate warranty returns bought in bulk, checked, repaired (though not in a lab), and sold as new.
  • The drives are Seagate drives pulled from working servers, cleaned with a rag and compressed air, and sold as new.
  • The drives came from the factory that makes Seagate drives but were marked defective due to not meeting quality standards.
  • The drives came from the factory that makes Seagate drives but were built after-hours from parts discarded due to defects or not meeting quality standards.
  • The drives are lower capacity drives that have been relabeled.
For home use they usually (though not always) work fine for a few years except for the areas on the platters that have defects. There will not be a warranty as they were not sold through an authorized supply chain.

For ZFS server use they get chewed up pretty fast as they're often near End-Of-Life.

With that said, your mileage will vary and I make no claims as to what they're selling as most likely they don't know the history of the drives either, they're likely just doing the online-sales part of selling for someone else. Or not. Or kind-of. Your chances with these drives are just as good as with that casino gal that says she loves you, and can she have $20.

I've been getting my 14TB drives from serverpartdeals. Word on the street is although these things are not new, the prices are damn good (the ultrastars in this capacity are 8.3 cents per GB, the Exos are 10 cents even), and if they do begin to fail early, their service is good. The way I see it, if I'm spending only 60% of the cost on the drives compared to new, it would appear to make up for if there may be a slight decrease in overall reliability.

Same, been using them for many years now. I have yet to have to return one. Even with 60%, this means (approximately) if every second one dies early, which they have yet to, then I am out nothing over new. It's a great store.

I ended up buying my drives from serverpartdeals.com as well. Seemed like they dropped their price for 14TB Recertified Seagate Exos X18 drives to $114.99 ($0.08/TB). So far they are running great. I may keep my eye on them to purchase some additional drives and add a second vdev next year.
