Does anybody have experience with Seagate 8TB NAS drives?

I just got one (part number ST8000VN0002). It runs a little hot, but I gather they run hot for everybody.

More alarmingly, I am having trouble consistently completing self-tests. Sporadically, a test would get stuck and not move anywhere until the drive is powered down.

Short and conveyance tests get stuck on 90%, and long tests get stuck on 10%.

If I abort the test without powering the drive down, the consequent tests will always get stuck.

If I power the drive down, and then turn it back up, the next test may run fine, or may get stuck again.

This is not due to the drive being accessed as I have not partitioned or created any volumes yet.

The SMART parameters are all good, and the drive reports that it is healthy.

No firmware updates are currently available.

Could be an issue unique to the individual drive?

The issue could definitely be unique to the drive; I just got one to see how I like it.

No firmware updates are yet available for this model.

I had run the tests under Windows 10. I have just restarted everything from the begging under Ubuntu 16.04; I will let y'all know in a few days.

Well, I do not see this weird stuck self-tests issue under Ubuntu. I do not know who do blame here; I had run hard drive tests under Windows for many years without any problems, but this is the first time I run the tests under Windows 10. A different hard drive (HGST with data) does not get stuck tests...

The 8TB Seagate drive appears to work fine under Ubuntu. Badblocks, no problem.

It does run hot under load (45 Celsius with good cooling).

Also the SMART ID# 191 (G-Sense_Error_Rate) keeps on climbing by about a thousand per day, not sure what that is about. Again this is something I see other people report in reviews; so maybe it is normal.

I am going to put ZFS on on the drive and see what happens.

G-Sense Error Rate increments due to external physical shock. What sort of chassis do you have these drives mounted in? Are they secure, not getting vibrated, etc.?

For testing it was the only spinning drive in a Lenovo TS140, right under the front fan.

The 8TB sucker vibrates itself. It does not subjectively feel too bad for a 7200 drive.

I wrote 2 TB to the disk, and scrubbed the pool after that. No problems. Also, no problems with self tests under FreeNAS, so far.

For testing it was the only spinning drive in a Lenovo TS140, right under the front fan.

The 8TB sucker vibrates itself. It does not subjectively feel too bad for a 7200 drive.

Are these 8TB Seagate NAS drives really 7200 rpm? I thought the Seagate NAS line was 5900 rpm and the Western Digital Red NAS were 5400 rpm? Or are you running Pro's?
