Did this boot disk have formatting on it previously? Also, is the system booted in BIOS or UEFI mode?

Sorry, I meant the target boot-disk, not the installer image. And yes, giving UEFI a shot would be good also..

the target "sdi" currently has truenas core; TrueNAS-12.0-U2.1
so the answer to your first question
Did this boot disk have formatting on it previously? Also, is the system booted in BIOS or UEFI mode?
is yes.... TrueNAS-12.0-U2.1
UEFI boot same result i think but it was slower to get to the error
i followed this guide: https://www.truenas.com/docs/scale/gettingstarted/installingscale/ (clicked on migrating from truenas core)
I do not have a third usb to do a fresh install on and i don't wanna ruin what i got going (though it ain't much only a pool and a smb share and some ACLs and 3 users), so if i cant do this i will get another flash drive to install to and try that, as long as i can import my pool

You could try wiping out your boot-drive entirely first using this from the shell after booting the installer:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdi bs=1M

That should clear everything already on the boot pool and hopefully get you past this error, since it sounds like some leftover partitioning or something similar isn't being cleared. Once thats done and you re-try the installation, does it pass that error?

Having what appears to be the same problem. My boot drive consists of two mirrored Kingston SSD's as shown below:

During install the installer throws the following error:

The server consists of a Asrock Rack C2750 with 32G ECC and TrueNAS-12.0-U5.1

I am holding off wiping the boot drive because I would like to revert back to 12.0 if I run into problems migrating to Scale, and wondering if there is another option to get past this problem.
