Our system we had dedicated to FreeNas install had moboard die before we got any real use of it, and we won't be upgrading the board, but we have these 4 great drives we'd like to use in Windows/Mac systems. Any advice / utility that will convert the freenas drives to a windows-usable state?

Just plug it in and use "Disk Management" to initialize and partition the disk.

Thanks - tried that, disk management reports i/o error, wasnt sure that Windows can properly read it. I'll go try the other 3 though :)

You can always run linux and DD the entire disk. Windows sucks at managing disks.

Let's not make it too complicated.

Boot your Windows with disks attached to a controller that can read them properly.
Open admin commant prompt
Run diskpart
In diskpart console, type:
list disks
- mind the PD#s of those disks
select disk PD#
clean
select disk AnotherPD#
clean
and so on
when done, type exit multiple times

Now unless there are other issues, you can initialize disks in disk management.
