putting a FreeNAS instalation on new motherboad/cpu

i build a cheap FreeNAS server with a 100euro 1u rack xeon e5450 it is consuming about 230w in idle and i need to bring that down.

So I'm thinking of buying a new xeon e3 1220 v5 aswell as a supermicro board and a new psu.

What do I need to do to move over my ZFS array of 4 3tb drives to this new system?
I would like do as little as possible.

Just move all your drives, including boot drive, to the new machine. Once booted, you will need to reconfigure the NIC. That's pretty much it.

realy? it is not like windows when you put an instalation in a new system it is all janky and unstable?

Even Windows has no problem with this kind of thing (besides activation issues, of course).

Aside from the bluescreens, when it can't load the chipset driver it is expecting, and you can't boot your system...

Eh, I find Windows a bit too happy too boot on other systems. Moving between Intel and AMD platforms would probably cause what you describe, though.

Yea, I can't take a full backup and restore Windows to any computer system, odds of it crashing are very high.

I'm not sure what systems you've done this on, but it has been hit or miss for me over the years. I'm about to try it again in a few weeks when I get my son a new computer and we transfer his old hard drive into the new PC.

Sometimes it has worked fine, others it gets a bluescreen before fully booting. It has happened with as little as just replacing the motherboard(same CPU, ram, video, etc), and sometimes I can swap lots of parts out and it works.

My experiences have nothing to do with AMD vs Intel, and purely deal with Windows shortcomings

yeah this is why i ask windows can work fine with new hardware or it can just go like crap but im risking about 4tb of movies and photos

I have Acronis with Universal Restore. It allows you to restore a backup to another computer using minimal driver issues. Once the backup is restored then you have to reboot a time or two so generic drivers are installed. I've used it twice and it worked but I wouldn't say it's a sure thing.
