i want to build a 4 drive nas with the option to go to 8 drives

what i need is a motherboard CPU and PSU

i was thinking of buying skylake for its better power efficientie

but i dont see spending 700€ for a supermicro board a xeon e3 1220 v5 a decent PSU and ECC ram as a fun thing to do.

what i want my server to do is easy
i want it to handle as a nas for home use
i want to be able to stream 4k movies aswell as 1 aditional stream or 4-5 simultanious 1080p streams

do i realy need a xeon for this? can a i3 handle this?
i could use second hand gear if an I3 can run it fine and it would be alot cheaper

Hi there,

if I remember well you will need a Xeon for anything like 3 simultaneous streams and more, especially if you want to be futureproof and 4K ready.
So if that's a load you are really expecting then there will be no way around Xeon, but you could check for 2nd Hand gear around the Supermicro X9 generation. Should be less expensive than a new Skylake plattform.

Streaming isnt an issue with something like Plex it's when you have to transcode those streams that you need more CPU horsepower. If you have the correct clients that will direct play your media you can get away with running less CPU.
