Hi I'm new to the forum and looking for Xeon cpu recommendations for a esxi hypervisor build.
I've built a few gaming systems and media machines in my time but this is my first server.
I have in the past had a HP microserver gen 7 N54L which I used to back up files on various
windows machines and using plex. Reading around the forum the past couple of days I've
decided on three X10 boards, and one thats cheap at the moment on ebay. I will be
experimenting with various vm's, freeNas, plex, windows server, and other fun stuff.

SPECS BUILD SO FAR
--------------------------------------------------
Case: Small tower
PSU: Gold Certified SEASONIC (WATTAGE??)
Storage: 4X 8Tb Enterprise HP huh721008ale60
SSD: OS
Raid controller: ??? onboard at the moment.
DIMM: ??? Still searching

(socket 1150)
supermicro X10SLL-F
supermicro X10SLM-F
supermicro X10SLH-F
Supermicro X10SLM+-F ----Cheap on ebay at the moment.

Most of the boards above are very similar and have a few various differences like usb 3.0 port count
and sata 3/2 port count. I've also narrowed down compatible Xeon E3-1200 v3 cpus that work with the boards above.
The CPU list I have been working on. I havent got around to pricing all the chips on ebay just the more powerful ones.
So if you could give me some tips are suggestions it would be much appreciated.

The huge downside is 1150 chips max out at 32GB of DDR3 RAM

You should have two PCIe slots free. When you run out of drive ports simply add one (eg M1015 In IT mode with internal ports) If you run out again buy an expander

Have Fun

You listed only 4 drives. Unless you are using RAIDZ1, you will want to go to (6 - or more) drives for RAIDZ2.

I've had some issues with the supermicro X10SLL-F and checksum errors on FN installs. Check my post history for details.
I couldn't pin-point the issues directly to the board but I suspect it has some issues. Could be just my unit though.
It's also the board in the line-up with the least features, so if you can afford it to go better - do it.

Overall I agree with @CraigD, if you got the finances go for 1151, more RAM and better energy-efficiency. Also most X10 Supermicro boards are EOL, so excpect no support from them. (The will still likely trying to help you)
