Proper way to update adguard?

I have the adguard home plugin installed. But every time I run the update when one's available, I lose all my settings (filterlists, url rewrites). So obviously I'm doing something wrong.
How am I supposed to update the plugin? Do I need to make a backup of settings first and if so, how do I do this? Am I also supposed to update the jail when updating the plugin? What does this do?

Adguard will tell you when there is an update, in the web GUI of the adguard admin.

http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3000

Just click update.

Is this proper? Not sure, but it keeps all you settings.
