Hello FreeNAS members,

for the past few weeks I have been trying to setup my personal FreeNAS home-server. Even though I can install it and set it up all fine, as soon as I try to make a file transfer from or to my windows desktop, the server halts and soon after it crashes. I have tried to freshly install it again and again and looked online, but without any luck. All help is greatly appreciated.

Hardware
Mobo: Supermicro X8SIE
CPU: intel x3430
RAM: 16gb (4x4gb) ECC registered
Boot device: 8gb usb 2.0 SanDisk Cruzer Blade 1.26
HDD: 5x 5tb TOSHIBA MD04ACA500 + 1x 5tb TOSHIBA HDWE150 -- The drives are configured in ZFS Z2

I also have gotten an LSI 9210i-8i hoping to fix the issue, but since it did not make any difference I have currently plugged all the disks directly on the motherboard.

The NAS is connected to a switch (where my computer is also connected) and from there it is connected to the router.

Thanks in advance

Do you see anything in the logs indicating what happened?

What is your PSU? What version of FreeNAS are you running?

My PSU is a 550watt seasonic 80+ so it should be good I think. I am currently running FreeNAS-9.10.2-U1.

I remember it said something on boot about gpt partition table being corrupt or invalid then it is using the secondary instead.

Where can I find the actual logs to post them?

For starters, I'd run a full pass of memtest86+ on the server to make sure it comes back ok. http://www.memtest.org/

I have checked the memory in the past, I run memtest from a live linux usb for 3 days without any errors. So I think I am safe from that point.

Can you write data to the server without it crashing? Try just copying a file locally on the server.

About the logs, I know where to find them in the shell, my problem is how do I get the files to post them, or at least display them on the shell so I can copy them.

I can do local writes to the array through the shell and sometimes I can even copy files from the windows computer, but if I try to copy a lot at once it will 99% crash. Sometimes it crashes even with smaller files, but generally anything in the tens of GB's will almost certainly cause it to crash.

Thanks for the help

If you have SSH enabled, putty into the box and you can copy that way, or run WinSCP and connect via SFTP and get the files.

thanks for explaining all the steps and such, I am quite a newbie.. Anyways here are the file you asked for:

I could not find any file named dmesg

the file from crash only had the value of "2048" inside it.

and here is the messages file under the /var/log directory:

Not exactly sure where you are at with your setup or the exact issues you are encountering .......but......

Jonnhy, go to these sites and filter through them and it may help you sort things out. you can effectively do a basic set up without the need for any script.

Hi

Thanks for all the links. I have already done quite a bit of research both for setting up my FreeNAS machine and for trying to figure out a solution to my problem. Unfortunately I cannot seem to find anything and this is why I have turned to the forums where the members, in my opinion have a much greater knowledge. I have watched all the videos that you posted and walked through the guides, thank you though for pointing them out.

thanks for explaining all the steps and such, I am quite a newbie.. Anyways here are the file you asked for:

I could not find any file named dmesg

the file from crash only had the value of "2048" inside it.

and here is the messages file under the /var/log directory:

Hello again. So it has been a long time since I posted in this thread. Unfortunately my problems have not been solved yet. I have tried so many things. Baught a LAN card to make sure it was not the motherboard NIC's issue. The main reason I believe it is a hardware problem is because I am getting the exact same error/problem of shutting down even if I do not use FreeNAS. So I tried installing ubuntu-gnome and zfs on top and I was getting the exact same problem. So at this point I believe it is either a problem with ZFS, or a hardware problem on my side. Hardware that is checked to be working.

RAM: I have run memtest for about 50 hours straight, without any errors, so I think its safe to say memory is good.
HDD: I have reformatted the hard drives multiple times and they are all working fine.
LAN: I have used both the motherboard and a PCI-X ethernet nic's and they both work the same.
Cooling: I have an intel x3430 95w tdp with a hyper 212 evo cooler.
SATA: I have tried both the onboard sata connectors and an LSI-9210i-8i with the exact same results.

I have tried zfs both under ubuntu and freenas.

I saw some older posts that raid z2 used to have problems and I am wondering if that could be the issue.

ok so I took another screenshot of my monitor from the console when the system hang again. I tried to search it online and apparently the error I am getting is regarding the ethernet port hanging, which makes no sense. Is there anyone who might know how to solve this, or who might be able to figure out what the actual problem is?

Thanks in advance.

Disable the Broadcom NIC and try again.

ok so I disconnected the pci-x network card and tried using the onboard intel NIC. I still got an error and the entire system hang during the first file transfer of media (about 40gb). This is a screenshot of the console output.

Thanks for the help

So would that be the hard drives? Could it be the raid z2? I read that in older versions it was quite buggy
