Problem connecting to AFP share as guest

I followed the steps in the user guide to setup an AFP share as a guest with a password. However, when I try to connect from my Mac, it gives me an error and never even prompts for the password. If I remove the share password from the AFP share configuration in FreeNAS and just leave the field blank, I can connect. I'm running OSX 10.5.8 and FreeNAS 8.0.4-p1.
