Hey,

I have some strange problem with my SMB and AFP shares. The guest access is working fine. But the share with guest access disabled, cant be accesed with my root user.

Owner of all the folders is the user root. I tried to create a new user, changed the ownership, that did not work either. When I try to connect to the shares, I get asked about user name and password. But then it doesnt connect, no error, it just doesnt connect like the password would be wrong.

- FreeNAS-11.3-U5
- Client: MacOS 11.12.1 "Big Sur"

Thanks for any help!

It may be a good opportunity for you to stop using root to share with (as it's not possible in TrueNAS 12).

Can you show the settings of the share and the SMB service?

Okay thanks for the hint. Then I will take this opportunity:

- I have created a new user and a new user group "sharing"
- I have changed the ownership of the data pool folder, which is shared, to the new group and user

Still I cant connect with "smb://server_ip/shared_folder". I am asked for user and password and then nothing.

Attached are my settings.

e: And I know that SMB1 support is not the best regarding security, but I have an old Windows XP PC in the local network, which need access to some folder. (Its a PC which controlls an old machine)

I am asked for user and password and then nothing.
How does "nothing" manifest... an empty finder window or just nothing at all?

Do you see The FreeNAS server in finder under Network

"Nothing": I get asked for username and password, I type it in, press connect, it loads, then the window "shakes" and I can type username and password again. This goes on forever.

I see the NAS Server in the finder Window under Network. All my guest access shares are working fine.

Okay I "fixed" it: I created a new AFP-Share with the new user and now its working.

Connect via: "afp://server_ip/shared_folder"

Somehow SMB shares with user login dont work under the new MacOS.

On some other thread someone wrote that Apple and Windows have some Copyright issues and because of that Apple has always to change the implementation of SMB. So maybe AFP ist the better way to connect to TrueNAS-Shares.

@sretalla thanks for your help and the hint with the root shares!

e: this can be marked es [Solved]

I'm not sure there's good logic in there, but from your previous post, I would put forward a theory...

If you're connected to guest shares over SMB and then from the same client attempt to connect with a named user over SMB, you will have a problem since you can't be authenticated twice (as different users) to the same SMB server (at the same time).
