Hi. So I have been running plex for almost 2 years on my freenas system and over a period I have digitized all my collection of movies/songs/series. I updated my plex server via gui like i always do and I noticed some of the files not showing on my tv with the message There are no items to display. I checked my brother's tv connected on the same network and they were missing there as well. The files do exist on the server (verified through cifs) and I am able to play the same files on the plex/web. He has a Sony bravia 2010 and I have a Sony Bravia from 2014. Seems unlikely both tvs decided to not show files at the same time. I haven't changed anything in the settings as well.
Next I decided to delete the "Movies" section and re add it. Tv shows were OK throughout. Still no joy. The plex/web shows all 180 movies I have where as on the tvs I see only 40 (maybe).
Then I decided to reinstall the plex plugin. Installed added storage and set everything as best as I could remember and still having the same issue. Movies are added but tvs still giving the same message. No TV updates were installed either, My entire movies library just went missing all of a sudden.

Sounds like a Plex bug. You should bring it up with Plex on their forums. FreeNAS doesn't have anything to do with the Plex database. I would say it is an incompatibility with the files and the TVs just judging by the symptoms. Might have been introduced in a newer version of Plex

If plex web is showing all your media, then the problem doesn't exist between your FreeNAS and Plex. I'd look into the Plex app on the TV (on the plex forums as others have mentioned). I've seen issues with TV apps, and have given up on my Samsung smart tv's. Now I use chromecast (Google home) plugged into HDMI.

My TVs don't have any plex app. It shows the server as a connected device. Anyhow I'm planning to borrow a ps3/ps4 to see if the media is really not being transcoded

Can I revert back to an older version of plex?

So if your TV's aren't using plex, what leads you to believe that it's a plex problem? Sounds like you are using DLNA then, which could explain why your TV's are choking on the listing of lots of files.

But my question is the DLNA was functioning perfectly till the last update for close to 2 years. What happened with the last update? Since only plex was updated I am pointing fingers. I have had no complains and barely any codec that wasnt running perfectly. Suddenly 60-70% of the database is missing.
Since I am guessing I need external devices to ru the movies now I am looking for suggestions. Roku or nvidia shield? Or would you suggest something cheaper. I'm not looking for any streaming services. I also want to wire the house so chromecast and other things are no good. My wifi is sketchy most of the times running very basic n routers and g extenders. i know they need an upgrade but I dont want to take a hit on my budget. thqnks

FreeNAS has nothing to do with the updates that Plex pushes out. The plugin is updated based on whatever Plex pushes out. There is zero collaboration between Plex and FreeNAS. Our plugin is merely the freebsd version of Plex that they publish.

Which GUI? FreeNAS or Plex? For some reason I thought you were running Plex on a different system (i.e. not FreeNAS).

I used to run Plex on the app on my Samsung DVD player. I tried to get my Samsung TV to pull up the database on my NAS but it was just WAY too slow. The dvd player caused problems with any movie with cinevia on it. I have since built a Raspberry Pi 3 running RasPlex. Runs flawlessly and cinevia has no hold over Pi's. Plus it only cost $36 on amazon.

Rasplex on a pi3 has been, by far, the best Plex experience for me over the years. I have tried many different iterations of media centers and this configuration has been solid and stable.

As long as you don't want pass through of high def codecs I totally agree. Cheap to get into and works flawlessly. In my living room I like to pass the high def audio to my receiver so I use a NUC DN2820FYKH.

I haven't had any issues with audio quality. Not sure what you are referring to.

DTS-HD and TrueHD pass through. Rpi doesn't support them. Plex will transcode to DTS and AC3 respectively. Not a big deal, just a personal choice. With my hearing failing rapidly I need all the help I can get in the audio department so I prefer the high def streams for better clarity.

Guess I don't have any media with DTS-HD or TrueHD

Thank you all for the replies. Sorry was away for a bit. So I borrowed a friends ps4 and the plex app works perfect. Detecting all my media files which the TV wouldn't through DLNA. Next I've ordered a raspberry pi and I'm planning to either get raspbmc (or after reading this forum rasplex).
Further in getting these reports for a few days on my mail from freenas.

In the mean time I'll just check a few videos on rasplex. Thanks a lot guys

FYI I have ripped my BluRay with different codes depending on the movies for eg Star Wars collection gets a 1080p dtsma whereas Notebook gets a 480p mp3. Some mkv some avi. It's a mixed bag.

If I'm understanding correctly. Your TV never had Plex installed on it? It was just reading files directly from the NAS? If that's the case, then I don't believe you ever had a true Plex set-up. Sure your TV was seeing the folders and files on the NAS. But you were never truly running through Plex. Plex needs a server and a client. PlexMediaServer running on your NAS and PlexClient running on your TV/DVD player/Raspberry Pi/PS4... etc.

The new Plex update may have caused problems with the DLNA interface. But if you were running Server/Client, I doubt you'd have seen any interruption.
