Plex plug-in disabling router?

Hello. Just curious if anyone has experienced the following issue.

For the last few months I've been trying to debug a problem where my VoiP adapter fails to answer incoming calls. Also, my ASUS loses internet connection. I believe I've finally determined the cause (at least at a high-level).

When I have the Plex Media Server plug-in enabled I get the following messages logged by router:

"miniupnpd[696]: sendto(udp): Operation not permitted"

This is accompanied by eventual VoIP adapter failure and router crash. If I disable the plug-in the problem doesn't occur.

Now what I'm trying to determine if this is problem with my router, FreeNAS, or Plex. I don't believe this is a problem with the router as I experienced the exact same issue with my previous router, which was a Netgear WND3700.

Anyone have any ideas?

It doesn't sound like a FreeNAS thing.

In fact, I think that the message you are seeing is a consequence and not a symptom. Just my 2 cents though.

It could be that Plex is doing something that triggers your problem. But that's something to go to the Plex forums for. I've never heard of anyone having a problem like this. So I'm thinking this is either a very very obscure bug, or you've got some kind of misconfiguration of some kind.

I don't know how VoIP works (I do in general) but maybe it's sharing the same ports that Plex is using. You could try to force Plex to use a different port to see what happens. I agree with CyberJock, this may need to be brought up in the Plex forums, it's not a FreeNAS issue, just Plex is running on your FreeNAS platform.

Thanks guys. Posted in Plex Communities and SmallNetBuilders. Took the VoIP adapter off the network, same problem. If I enable PMS but disable its DLNA server, the router-crash and miniupnpd messages go away.

Two years later...

My AC68P router is also complaining of constant 'miniupnpd[1184]: sendto(udp): Operation not permitted' errors, although there don't appear to be any ill effects apart from the constant stream of messages themselves. Turning off Plex Media Server's DLNA feature did not fix it for me, however. But disabling the router's uPnP did stop the errors immediately. I'll give it a few days/weeks to see if that's a fair trade-off.
