Ordered my processor :)

http://ark.intel.com/products/80917/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1226-v3-8M-Cache-3_30-GHz

I think I am going to just use the stock fan for now unless someone chimes in saying its a bad idea.

Only real reason to replace the stock cooler is noise (or overclocking, but I'm not going to bother going there). With more heatsink surface area and a larger fan, the fan can spin more slowly which means less noise. Plus you can have your choice of fans and go with one known to be quiet.

The stock cooler is sufficient to get the job done cooling. It's up to you whether you're ok with the noise level. It will vary depending on how hard the CPU is working.

I have 2 different systems I've built recently around the E3-1271, one being my Plex server. For the Plex I opted for a cooler with a 120mm fan (tiny case) and my desktop has a different one with a 140mm fan. My desktop has 5 fans and is dead silent.

This node 304 is going in a under stairs closet, noise I don't think will be an issue. I think the stock fan will do for now, if I have issues ill consider changing it out at a later time.

Still need to figure out the usb sticks and im set after purchasing 3 more 3tb red drives.

Thanks for your input! My build will be similar to your freenas build.

Got my new 3 drives the other day, put them in and got the computer booted up.

I knew there was a freenas update so I updated to the newest version.

Created a raidz2 data pool with all 6 disks.
added a windows share
installed plex
created a data folder for plex

Was able to connect to the nas from another computer, things looked good.

Shut it down and brought it home.

Later that night I hooked it all up at my home and it was not coming up. Hooked up a monitor to try to get the IP since I was not finding it on a scan of my network.

The screen read: This is a nas data disk and can not boot system. System halted.

Any idea what caused this? The NAS rebooted after updates and junk yesterday when I Finished it but booted like that when I got home.

Go into the BIOS and make sure those drives are not selected as primary for booting. Your PC selected the wrong disk to boot from and there's nothing to boot on the data disks, but it helpfully gives you a semiuseless warning.

THAT did it!!!

Not sure what changed, possibly adding the 6x WD 3tb RED drives did it, before I had made the USB image and booted it up as is, I am guessing since the hard drives were added the computer changed them to the default. I have set the usb to boot first, then uefi then the wd drives.

Thank you so much! I have had some other computer problems and its been a rough night. I appreciate the help!
