Hi

I have an older but very well equipped PC that I am turning into a Nas server using Truenas.

all the videos i see are for freenas but im assuming they are similar just with a new name.

lets jump right in:

Need advice to set up the following:

(2) 240 SSDs
(1) 120 SSD
(1) 1.5TB HDD (WD Green)

best way to setup? I am assuming i will not need them in RAID I will use ZFS to create?

I want to make sure I have the latest instructions, so far heres what I have:

1. Download latest truenas .ISO onto a flash drive
2. Have a 2nd USB Flash drive to install to, this becomes the boot drive
3. This is as far as I have gotten! ha!

please link me to a sticky or the LATEST correct setup instructions. Anyone can watch youtube, but I want the latest and best and easiest to understand if poosible.

thanks in advance.

Did you read the TrueNAS manual to get at least an idea what to do? It's not hard to find under the "Documentation" link on top of the page. And taking some time to read the forum rules would not harm anybody.

Again read the manual. And read the part about ZFS extra carefully.
(1) 1.5TB HDD (WD Green)
If this becomes your data pool then know that a single disk for a ZFS pool is a big no no. And what is your intention with those SSD's?
. Have a 2nd USB Flash drive to install to, this becomes the boot drive
Bad idea. An USB stick as boot device is not longer recommended. Better use one of your SSD drives as a boot device.
And what other hardware do you want to use.
the LATEST correct setup instructions
You don't need a sticky for that. The TrueNAS manual is there if you need it. It's pretty much up to date.

Only if you set it the three disks at the same time as a single vdev. Of course it will only count as a 240GB drive

Ok thanks for this.

Currently I have the following setup:

My Mobo supports 8 disks total.

4 disks on Sata III 6GB/s
and 4 on Sata II 3GB/s

Currently I have setup 7 disks:

4x 2TB ssds in Raid z1 (on SataIII) This will be my data only pool
2x 240GB ssds in Raid 0 (on SataII) This will be ??? (help)
1x 120 Boot disk(on SataII) This is of course a boot disk.

I do havbe another 1.5TB WD GREEN HDD, not currently setup, but can be if needed.

Now,

I have a windows 10 Machine to access the TrueNas.

I have been watching quite a few videos on the BEST way to setup Pools/Vdevs/Shares.
I have watched so many but I am currently following one particular guy who is setting up a basic Sahre on TrueNas12, which I am running.

I have not transferred any real data yet, just wanting to make the best decision. I do see my main pool in windows under network, but not as a mapped drive. I find this strange. I see the machine called TRUENAS under Network in file explorer, then under that I see folders and can read and write and modify, but it never asked my to map the drive.

ANYWAY--

Here are my questions-- My needs are basic. Probably a plex server, backups of PC's, and some file storage. Debating whether or not to have it as a cloud media server where I can access media remotely.

1.. In the video im following https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjLaK8yQAag the guy sets up a Pool, then a ROOT dataset, then another USER dataset under it

So on my machine, the directory is:

POOL(leverssds)>ROOTDATASET(alldata)>USERDATASET(nas) with me as the user, not root.
Is this a good start? Reasons for the root dataset?

2. my second pool (2x 240 GB ssds) says "system dataset pool" in the pools menu. So obviously there are some files stored here. I also have my jails and iocage on this pool. Can I delete this pool and start over? I cant seem to get it to show up in my file explorer and I've tried everything I know, which aint much :).

3. I am open to suggestions. As I said earlier, I can delete everything and start froim scratch as I do feel since I am a noob at this I might have made some mistakes, ticking boxes and making changes in setting up my first pools and ACLs. In fact, now that I have about 20 hours of reasearch and quite a few videos under my belt, I am leaning toward starting fresh. I dont know. Thoughts?

To create an SMB share you need to:
1. Have a dataset created
2. Create the Share
3. Edit the permissions on the dataset to allow the user / users access

When I set up a windows share I set them up as: Pool/SMB/"Dataset to be shared" for example Install
Then I share (using Sharing on the left menu) and Windows Shares. I share the dataset "Install" as Install
Then I add the permissions to the dataset

Your second pool is just another pool useable in the same way as anything else. However its RAID0 / Striped which is not a good place to keep the system dataset. Move it in System/System Dataset to the RAIDZ pool

You seem to have done things about right - and if you did start again what would you do different?

Lastly, what are you doing for backup?
