Hello there. So I am going to install FreeNAS on a box with software raid controller on it. I want this box to be basically a NAS, but I also wanted to be able to download stuff and also be able to transcode media. So basically this box would be my media workhorse. Is this possible with freeNAS? I read some older posts (2009) that said it wasn't possible and that people had failed at transcoding. It's 2011 now and I'm wondering if it changed.

Also, there were two raid controllers that I was planning on buying, but I don't know where to find an "approved hardware" listing for FreeNAS. So can any of you tell me if these two are proven to work? And if not, what raid controllers are?

FreeNAS isn't sized out to hold the software to do media transcoding as part of the base package. If you were to putter around with setting up the stuff to operate out of the datastore, you might be able to get it to work though. FreeNAS is intended to be a NAS, and if you want more generalized services, you may be better off with FreeBSD.
