I decided to come back to the hard drives and have been running memtest86 for last two days.

How many passes is good enough for ECC memory? Been going two days now without an error.

A lot of people say at least three passes. Two days is probably ok.

Alright I am back to the conveyance test not working.

[root@freenas ~]# smartctl -t conveyance /dev/ada0
smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [FreeBSD 9.2-RELEASE-p12 amd64] (local build)

This happens on all 9 drives I am testing.
Is conveyance tests just not supported by the drive or do I need to mount this thing somehow first?

Conveyance tests aren't supported according to the response from the drive, so no you can't run the test.

Now if you are running your system with a hardware RAID controller or a controller that doesn't do proper SMART passthrough you can get that error too. But if you can run short and long tests that it's not a controller problem. ;)

Running my first long test now and its going to take about 10 hours for each of the 4tb drives. they are all running at once. How long is the bad blocks test going to take if this one is already at 10 hours?

badblocks will erase data on the disk, so it's not an option. It can take as long as 2-3 days depending on the tests performed.

Disks are new. Blank I am trying to put them through their paces before setting up my pool and stuff. Also Any advice on a ups that works well with freenas? I want to put one on when I actually put data on here.

Oh, crap. You're right. Thought this was a different thread. Haha. Yeah, I'd do badblocks on them. If you do it all in tmux you can run badblocks on all of the disks at the same time.

Also Any advice on a ups that works well with freenas? I want to put one on when I actually put data on here.

Most people swear by APC for build quality and reliability. The Back-UPS line is more oriented towards consumers. It's an "offline"-type UPS which kicks in the battery and inverter when the line power drops. It has a slower switchover time although a computer with a good power supply should still remain powered through the switchover. Most models do not have true sine wave output so they are harder on connected electronics. I believe they are close enough to a sine wave that they will work with active PFC power supplies, but be sure to check.

The Smart-UPS line is geared towards enterprise. It's a "line-interactive" type that can correct over- or under-voltage as well. It has a pure sine wave output, an almost instantaneous switchover time, and works perfectly with active PFC power supplies.

My Smart-UPS C 1500 worked poorly with FreeNAS at first (I kept getting "data stale" messages and disconnects), but after I updated the firmware on it, it's been problem-free. Got a 1 minute power interruption yesterday, it worked as expected. If the UPS has a display that shows expected battery life under the current load, test it by switching the breaker off. I was surprised that my UPS went from ~240 minutes battery run time to ~90 minutes run time in 30 seconds when the power went out. I drastically reduced the wait time to shutdown in the FreeNAS settings.

Looking at the website for NUT (Network UPS Tools): http://www.networkupstools.org/ the developers state that APC is very closed and does not cooperate with them, the driver is based on the bare minimum supported by the USB protocol for a UPS ("USB HID"). Other manufacturers have greater levels of support. I noticed Cyberpower and Tripp-Lite have worked with the NUT developers and actually contributed hardware for testing - one of the NUT developers works for Tripp-Lite. It's too bad Cyberpower and Tripp-Lite don't have the reputation APC does, because they should work better with NUT.

That said, all you REALLY need is for the UPS to communicate an "on battery" status message to FreeNAS where it will either commence shutdown immediately or start a timer to shutdown. All UPSes supported by NUT should be able to do that:

Activated the badblocks test this morning and three drives have been spitting out this email every half hour or so since.

This message was generated by the smartd daemon running on:

host name: freenas
DNS domain: matt.local

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/ada1, failed to read SMART Attribute Data

Device info:
HGST HDN724040ALE640, S/N:pK1334PCGXX4WS, WWN:5-000cca-24ccd2417, FW:MJAOA5E0, 4.00 TB

For details see host's SYSLOG.

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional messages about this problem will be sent.

Is this a real error I am getting or did I cut in when the long test was still running? I logged back into the shell when I first got it and it still read 0 errors on the badblocks test. The long tests were supposed to take 10 hours and I wonder if three of them weren't quite finished when I ran badblocks.

edit: Now that I am reading through the emails it seems the errors vary a bit. Read SMART self test log failed/unable to open device/read smart error log failed.

All seems to be sounding similar and its from the same three drives.

The drives shouldn't give errors just because a test is running.
Data queries should work normally, with I/O slowed down because of the parallel activity.

Whelp errors continue. Looks like 3/9 of these drives are going to have to be RMA'd. Its only like 12 hours into the badblocks test.

Why do you say that? Are disks failing badblocks?

ooh, you'll want avoid running tmux via the webGUI's shell. Do it locally or via SSH.

In any case, check the SMART info for the drives. With some luck, they're just CRC errors from the connection, which are typically easily solved with new SATA cables.

Ill check it when its done but the first short and long smart tests I did were fine. And the cables are brand new.

Is there a way to log in with putty without making a keyfile? Can I just use my freenas root password?

To SSH in as root with a password, you'll have to manually enable that option in the WebGUI.

Please note that this makes the server easier to breach if the network is hostile (shouldn't be a problem behind a firewall at home).

Alright how do I read this now? I know Reallocated_Event_Count, Current_Pending_Sector, and Offline_Uncorrectable all need to be 0 and they are. The temp is a bit high and I need to work out cable management better or change the case to get it down to 30. If there are no errors here but I got errors from badblocks does that mean there is a problem between the motherboard and the hard drives transferring data? I got errors on ada1-4 with a variety of description most seem to be about being unable to access the disk at that moment.
