Ok not going to get a server chassis o I am editing this post so I dont have to make another.

This is what I am going with so far. This is for freenas with storage backups maybe torrents and some personal cloud service. Will add plex also which is why I have this motherboard/cpu.

I am wondering about harddrives though. I know its kind of a big crap shoot for reliability.

Was looking at these.

Is there anything people seem to be having luck with lately instead?

Want to pick up a pair of Solid State Drives for jails and a Satadom in place of the usb stick.

Then I have to estimate what kind of power supply I need. Want to keep it towards 30% of max and under 50%.

The HGST 4TB NAS drives are only $5 more each and have a better feedback rating on NewEgg than the ones you're suggesting.

These?

They do have a bunch of favorable reviews i didnt notice them because I was looking for 5400 rpm.

Should I worry about hear and wear and tear from the higher speed?
Yes, those are the ones. They were $20 off a week or two back -- but limit 5 per customer.

I'm using 7200rpm desktop drives in my machine, and they run somewhere around 30 degrees C. I have no idea about wear and tear, but I doubt that many drives fail because of bearing failure, and a head crash at 5400rpm isn't going to be significantly more survivable than one at 7200rpm. I know that @cyberjock prefers slower drives, but I'm still looking at those HGST NAS drives for a future upgrade.

If you can keep 7200RPM drives cool and want them, totally go for it. The only reason I advocate against them is because it seems that 90% of users can't even keep 5400RPM drives cool, so 7200RPM drives are an even worse idea.

For that work load I would consider a cpu with fewer cores and higher clock speed. I'm guessing most of your data transfers are going to be via cifs, which means most of those cores are going to be sitting idle. Also, if you are on a 1gb LAN the 5400rpm drives will saturate that link.

The cpu is really for plex. i want this trans-coding stuff for my tvs in my apartment. That way I only need something small on my bedroom tv to receive it. Also hoping for it to work over the internet to a remote laptop.

I think I can swing a silent power source on this should be low enough power.

For the jails is there a difference between enterprise ssd's and consumer ones? Mainly worried about something on there I dont know about designed to help interfering with freenas.

If you aren't trying to use them for an L2ARC or ZIL, consumer are just fine.

I got a 32GB Innodisk for like $5 more than the cost of the newegg link you provided. So I'd go with the Innodisk. :P

I got all my parts today. And Ill be going to home in a few hours to set this up for burn in/testing.

What is the best way to get FreeNAS onto this SataDom? The machine wont have a optical drive so the only way I can think of is opening another maching and installing it there then installing on it like a USB stick.

hmmm having trouble with the power supply. Can you buy different cords for a modular power supply? Ive never actually had to do this but the stuff that came with this 450w isnt going to cover 8hd's and 2 ssd's.

I suppose I can go to the store tommorow there should be some kind of splitter I would think.
