FreeNAS 9.10.2U3 NetXtreme BCM5270 APE lock fail under VMWare on HP MicroServer Gen8

I'm getting a kernel panic after passing through the second onboard network interface under VMWare on a HP Microserver Gen8. The error message is bge0: 'APE lock 0 request failed' with an outcome of 'bge0: attaching PHYs failed'.

Has anyone seen it before, do you know what causes it & is there a workaround?

It's probably a problem with the driver.

Yes, use intel GbE. It's better hardware, anyway.

The PCIe slot is already taken by a SATA AHCI card, I need this so that I can pass the onboard AHCI controller through to FreeNAS.

Can you give a full description of your setup? Are you trying to pass through the physical NIC hardware to the FreeNAS VM?
