Mounting a dataset over an existing directory in jail

Running freenas 11 U2 and was wondering if I have a jail that has directory with some files in it and then I point a host dataset to the same directory what happens to files that are in the directory already. Also what happens with any files I copy into that directory within the jail while the jail is running and if I were to shutdown or delete the jail?

Why would you do that?

I have a jail running sabnzbd and I have the settings saved in a seperate directory outside of the jail. I deleted the original settings directory and then mounted the outside one where the original directory would go. This just led me to wonder what happens if I don’t delete the original. Also if I upgrade the jail will I have to go in and delete the original settings directory again?
