SOLVED middlewared: setting up plugins

After applying an upgrade, I have ended up with an inaccessible system apart locally. Whilst booting the system appears to get stuck with this msg:-

middlewared: setting up plugins (pwenc) [4/59]

The count does not increase but eventually, after about 10 mins, it carries on, but never reaches a point where the GUI comes up. Also I can't ssh in as there seems to have been a change to prevent root from logging in.

Just thought I'd let anyone know who's interested, that I changed the USB stick for booting from a Kingston to SanDisk Ultra Fit and all my problems were gone.
