make config returns cannot open tty-output from jail on 8.3.1

I am having issues compiling ports inside my 8.3.1 jail. After issuing the make install, make config commands I am not getting ncurses menu to select options during the make. Instead I get "cannot open tty-output " Searching the web it seems this might be an issue in dialog4ports but I havent found a solution yet.
Has anyone else run into this on the 8.3.1 final release or releases before this? Is there a easy workaround?

How are you accessing the jail?
