Hi All,

I made a really bad newbie mistake.

I did not backup my FreeNas configuration file from 9.2.1 Stable release. I ended up erasing the OS on the USB stick by performing a quick format then burning the 9.3.1 Stable ISO on the stick and isntalling fresh.

I was able to import my volume and I can see all my data on the drives no problem. However I have lost all my configurations such as: jails, plug-ins, etc.

Can anyone please walk a newbie through on how to recover from this disaster?

The system had been working flawlessly for more than a year now...regret messing with it.

I don't think you can recover the file sadly. If all you did to the USB stick is putting the 9.3 ISO then you can maybe recover it with appropriate software but it would be a miracle.

Thanks I will try those options, however is there a way to rebuild the configuration file from the storage array or volume?

Is the old configuration file stored as a backup on the volume by any chance so that I can retrieve it from there instead of trying to recover the file from the USB stick?

Also what file am I looking for on the USB stick anyone have an idea?

Sadly no, it's only on the boot drive. If you know how to use scripts I've made one to backup the config and send it to an email address, see the link "Useful Scripts" in my signature if you're interested.

I know on 9.3 it's /data/freenas-v1.db but I don't remember where it is on 9.2, I recommend a search on the forum.

Thanks for all the help y'all.

Here how I fixed the issue:
1. Downloaded UFS Explorer Standard Edition
2. Scanned for all possible partitions
3. Selected paritions that may have my database file
4. located the data base file called freenas-v1.db
5. Uploaded it to the new version of FreeNas

all my configurations have been restored...I got really lucky this time!!

Actually, the .system dataset contains selected copies of the config file (somewhere...).
