LSI 9300-xx Firmware Update - Fixes a controller reset issue in LSI 9300-xx HBA cards

Hey Community,

If you are using an LSI 9300 HBA with FreeNAS or the soon-to-be TrueNAS CORE, you may experience some performance issues causing the controller to reset. After working with Broadcom, we’ve come up with a firmware update that is not available on their website that should resolve these controller reset issues. To resolve this issue for FreeNAS systems affected in the field, here are the instructions for updating the firmware to version 16.00.12.00.

I have an LSI 9300-8E (from iX). I'm not aware of any "performance issues causing the controller to reset", what would that look like to end users? Also, how can one determine the current version of its firmware? Thanks.

It would look like a random reset most likely. Looks like Fredda already gave you the command.

Is the update recommended or discouraged if one is not apparently experiencing these problems? i.e. is the chance of regressions low?

It depends if you had issues. I downgraded to 14.00 because I had so many issues. Now I’m perfectly stable. if you aren’t having issues read all the release notes and make a decision.

I'm also not seeing resets, but am on a super-old firmware and with a card not in the list from the .12 firmware download... I have a SAS9305-24i and can only find the .11 online from LSI... any chance there's a version for me?

I've got the same HBA. This firmware does not apply to the SAS9305-16i or 24i. The Broadcom firmware for the SAS9305-xx is SAS9305_16_IT__P.bin and the date and file size for .11 don't match between the two, so not even trying.

I was directed here by engineering because of debug I sent about random reboots indicated HBA problems.

I've got a 9305-24i. The zip file only contains firmwares for 9300 cards and only up to 16 ports.
  • Is this patch applicable to 9305 cards or just 9300?
  • If applicable to 9305 cards, does Broadcom happen to have a variant of this for my 9305-24i that you can add to the zip?

Anxiously waiting updated firmware for my 9305-24i, which is experiencing random resets and reboots
@ajgnet The resets started happening after you upgraded to TrueNAS 12?

Not sure if this happens on 11.3. I put the new controller in at the same time I upgraded to 12.0.

Tried different 9305-24i controllers, also a different motherboard. I was able to catch the error before a reboot.

Flashed a 9302-8i/ServeRAID N2215 without issue. The 9300-8i firmware seems to apply to it.

On the Broadcom website only version 16.0.10.0 is listed for sas-9300-8i:

I'm just curious what happened to 16.0.11.0, and moreover whether 16.0.12.0 is recommended only for Truenas / ZFS ?

Hi, I have a 9300-16i card which has 2 controller on board. Followed the instruction and FW upgrade was successful. But after I check the bios, looks like only one controller got the upgrade, the 2nd controller still has the old FW. Is that correct or do I miss any step?
