Is FreeNAS 11 safe now?

Hi there,

Just a generic question - I avoided the whole Corral thing because I had been getting bad vibes from the forums (I usually wait a month or two before major upgrades anyway, to gather feedback and stuff). From what I can see, things are going well with 11, but maybe I'm missing something?

I only use FreeNAS for file sharing via Samba and AFP (for my MacBook Pro's TimeMachine backups), and for jails for my Kodi database in SQL. I also have a jail for Transmission but I haven't used that in forever. Specs in sig.

Anything else I should know about before diving in...? Honestly, 9.10 is perfect for me, does all I want it to do. From what I could see, the only potential new feature I could use is the Cloud sync thing (we backup all of our photos to Google Photos once a month, manually), but I think that's only in 11.1 anyway? I guess the better question is - is this even worth it for me? Will 9.10 continue to be supported for a while?

Thanks!

FreeNAS 11 is just fine, zero issues. Don't use your signature for your hardware specs, people using mobile platforms can't see it.

Yep 11 is just fine, I would guess that most of us who are on here regularly have already switched. I manage three systems and they are all on the 11 train with no problems.

FreeNAS 10 was a lot of reworks and some poor decisions and once it was figured out it was axed with work quickly going towards something much closer to FreeNAS 9.10 and the work is now going along in baby steps instead of big leaps of faith.

I have been running 11.0 since the release candidate days. Everything has been good for me.

Ok, good to hear! So - just a straight upgrade from the Update dialog in the GUI, or do I need to do a clean install?

Anybody have issues with jails and the likes?

And, point taken about sigs on mobile devices, thanks.

That worked fine for me.

After upgrading to 11, you will still be able to run jails created under 9.10, and do pkg stuff (installing/removing/upgrading installed binary packages), but you won't be able to build ports, or to add new jails.

I used to update within a few weeks of every new release, and then replication broke in one of the 9.3 updates (with strange version numbering) so I rolled back and stayed there for about 9 months. Eventually, I started having issues with Jails that were running on an unsupported version of FreeBSD so updated to the final release of 9.3.1, and then to 9.10.1-U4, which was the last to support VirtualBox. I'm still there as it still does everything I want and has been rock solid (don't think I've rebooted since updating). I know I'll need to update again at some point, but with changes to virtualisation (bhyve) and the jails (iocage) I won't be updating until things start to cause me problems again.

It's certainly been a far easier ride than it ever was doing regular updates, and one I'd thoroughly recommend ;)

Yeah - I'm seriously thinking of leaning that way for that very reason, but - in my experience, when one is forced to update, the timing doesn't always work out, and I don't always have the time I'd need to dedicate to it...I'll have to give it a think.

or to add new jails.
Why not? Is that broken? It worked just fine going from 9.3 to 9.10 and I had several of both living comfortably beside each other while I converted them all.

I did wonder about that, as my experience from 9.3 to 9.10 was like yours. I still have a few 9.3 jails on my system that I haven't needed to update, but where I have, I created 9.10 jails in the same mnt/tank/jails folder. Was hoping the same would apply when I eventually update to 11.x.

It is for me, and that seems to be the expected outcome. I haven't bothered to try to figure out if there's a workaround; I've just used my test box (which was a clean FN11 install) to create new jails.

You can't create new 10.x jails, but 11.x jails should be possible, IIRC.

Yeah, I think that's a warden limitation that was never worked around.

I cannot seem to resolve the missing GUI issue in 11. Anyone have a workaround or should I downgrade?

How about starting your own thread and explaining what exactly is wrong, instead of hijacking an unrelated thread?
