The documentation say to use FreeNAS from usb instead of cd you must download the .img.xz file instead of the .iso file. I have no idea why it is not the same file for either case.

This creates a giant problem when there is no img.txz files to be found from at the download links. Only .iso files are found.

I tried extracting the iso to a bootable usb drive with no success.

Should I just give up and repurpose the $900 box I built for FreeNAS or will it be this struggle with outdated resources the whole way through. I am quickly realizing what looks good on paper here is just not the case.

You could download the files from Sourceforge. Here's the link: FreeNAS-8.3.1/RELEASE-p2/

It's ultimately up to you, whether you want to use FreeNAS or not.

Well this is sad. It means I just downloaded the wrong one yet again. I could not figure out what p2 was and so i got the release without the p2. It did get passed the boot prompt though I am stuck there until I learn to proceed. Thanks.

outdated resources?

instead of giving up you could try reading the tons of other posts on these forums that cover installing to USB...just a thought, you know, to do your homework

I guess when you install a new software you skip the wiki and go straight to searching the forum for documentation? Personally I'm not into searching "tons of other post" as you call it, when there is a wiki for that specific purpose.

It seems I have gotten over my hurdle. The console finally came up and I set the interface and logged in with firefox. There is a lot to learn and setup. Hopefully, it will go pretty smooth now. I actually come back to mark this solved but I'm not seeing how. Thanks

I figure if you were here for any other reason that to harass people, you would have cited what rules I have broken, right?

The wiki did say "FreeNAS® 8.3.1-RELEASE-p2 was released on April 10, 2013. This is a bug fix release". The FreeNAS.org tab on the top of the forum page, would have taken you to the download section. I provided the Sourceforge link, not knowing if you needed a 64 or 32 bit version.

Unfortunately there are some disconnects with some of the documentation, links, faq's, etc. And, due to politics, it's not an easy problem to resolve. Sorry, you got caught in the crossfire.

While you looked at the wiki, the sad reality is that most of the new user's just download the software and go, without looking at the hardware requirements, etc. Then come back later (still not having read any documentation or searched the forum) and say, why won't it work? Just this week, we had someone trying to run it on a 13 year old pc with 128Mb of RAM.

I'd encourage you to read the manual and some of the stickies at the top of the forum pages.

Well this is sad. It means I just downloaded the wrong one yet again. I could not figure out what p2 was
