I had previously been using Nas4free but recently had a power outage that caused it to give an error stating it could not find the config.xml file. I had wanted to try freenas anyway so I attempted to install it to no no avail. It is giving me the attached error.

I had nas4free installed on an internal 250gb hd (it was a spare laying around). I am now using a usb drive since I do not have a cd/dvd drive on the nas machine. I am assuming that my disks are still associated with the nas4free install?? I have unplugged the hard drive that the os was installed on.

Please help, I am frustrated and wanting to learn.

Looks like you aren't using a name brand USB stick. That's probably the problem.

See the part where it says "DaneElec" in your picture. Never heard of that brand.

It also says "MicroUSB" which might mean MicroSD converter. Those are a major problem for a lot of people to. Regardless of whether it is or not the brand is unknown to me so I immediately focused on it as a cause for potential problems. I added the comment to the wiki page for hardware requirements to avoid memory converters and use name brand because they are more often than not a cause for problems.

Great info! Thank you. I will have to go to the store tomorrow to purchase a new one. All of them around the house are not name brand. I will follow up with the results.

Oh god... you don't have 8GB of RAM? You need 8GB of RAM minimum for FreeNAS with ZFS. That kmem warning on your screen is basically your red flag that your system is going to be unstable and may crash alot. it may also take your data with it.

Please check out our hardware requirements as you certainly don't fit the criteria.

Even to use UFS? I have existing data and assumed I would have to wipe the discs to move to ZFS. Also, I have 8gb but it appears that the storm crapped out one stick leaving me with only 4gb. I already have another in the mail!

Hmm....

1.UFS is basically "dead" to FreeNAS since the code is already removed from the master branch. So you might want to go back to NAS4Free after you read #2.

2. You will have to reformat to go to ZFS, and that erase everything.

3. You don't have any concerns I mentioned above with 4GB of RAM with UFS, but as I said in #1, it's dead. I don't even consider UFS an option anymore and assumed you were using ZFS already since the next FreeNAS release will have UFS pulled out.
