Good morning, all-

So I've done a ton of research of FreeNAS and finally got it installed and running. I am able to access the WebUI, log in, click around, everything is grand. However, I can't create a new volume, because there are no member disks to select. I have FreeNAS running on an old Dell GX150, so I can't boot via USB. I was able to get it installed by booting to DVD then installing it to an 80 GB HD, that I had planned on using as my main drive for my backups. What I've been able to find is that you cannot use the same HD for storage that FreeNAS is installed on...is that correct? If so, how am I supposed to run FreeNAS from just a DVD? I'm so lost now...please help...

Hi Jbach,

Yes, that is correct, you can't use the same disk for both FreeNAS and as storage. FreeNAS 8 can't be run from CD/DVD, it sounds like you probably need to upgrade your hardware, a single disk system isn't really what FreeNAS 8 is intended to be used on.

thanks protosd

I ended up getting creative, and thought I'd share just in case anyone else decides to use the same kind of POS dinosaur I did. The GX150 had come with a 20 GB HD. I took it and the 80 GB I was originally using to a newer PC and formatted both, then installed FREENAS on the 20GB. Here's where it gets fun:

The MB only has one ribbon for an IDE HD, so I connected the 20GB drive to it. I then removed the IDE CD-ROM drive and used the IDE ribbon to connect the 80 GB to it. Power on, configured FREENAS to at least get to the WebUI, and !VOILA! a full 80GB ready to volume. Thanks for your quick response though!!!

Great improvising! Thanks for sharing your solution. You could probably replace that 20GB disk with a IDE compact flash adapter and change out the 80G disk for something larger also.
