Install on USB, but what about backup?

Hello,

I have a HP Proliant Microserver with 4 harddisks. 2 1TB and 2 250GB. For some reason after i use the built in raid system i cant boot FreeNAS from CD. So I didnt use the the built in raid system and installed it on one of the disk, but thats just wrong, right?

I read that the OS can be installed on a USB key instead to save disks. But what about backup of the USB key with OS on?

You can backup your config file from the GUI.

2gb is the minimum required. 4gb will be fine.

Out of interest, do you mean the the built-in BIOS RAID - if so why are you using this? You should leave the disks configured in the BIOS for AHCI.

Yes, i´ve done that now and i am going to install Freenas on a USB key. i first thought that i needed to have the two small disks with 250GB mirrored and install OS on thoose.

Nevermind, i found it under System | Settings | Save Config. :)

What if the usb key crashes? how do i restore it or restore to a new USB key? i know that i can upload the config file but i cant do that until i have install FreeNAS OS again, so how to do it?

What if the usb key crashes?

Make another USB key with FreeNAS, just as you did the first time. Boot it. Upload your config. Job done.
