If 11.3-U1 reboots happily, then check the upgrade train to make sure 11.3-U2.1 is actually offered, instead of 11.1. Otherwise, you'll have to run the midclt command again before attempting the upgrade again.

Reboot worked this time! The update train does offer the appropriate 11.3-U2.1 stuff - not 11.1. I think I am going to try it. Thanks for all of your help. I still feel like a newbie - needed help figuring out how to select different boot environments upon restart. But I am learning.
