SOLVED How to Troubleshoot SMART Errors

For a few months I've been getting emails about smartd logging errors for a specific drive, /dev/ada3,with references to SYSLOG and a suggestion to use smartctl for more information.

1. Where is SYSLOG and how do I read it?
   
   
2. What should I be doing with smartctl?

The ominous but opaque multi-zone error rate is non-zero, but what really matters is that SMART tests are failing left and right. Replace the drive. It should still be in warranty.

The values we look for are #5, 197, 198, 199, and 200. If any of these are not a zero value then that is an indicator of a failure or pending failure. Your drive is in warranty until Jan 2016 so you will have no problems replacing it with WD.

Thank you! I replaced the failing disk with another and it is re-silvering. WD gave me an RMA and I have the failed disk all boxed up, ready for UPS.
