I've setup raid (mirror, 2 disks) on my freenas 9. And now I don't want to use raid any more, how can I remove raid and still keep the data on disk (at least on one disk) ?
Thanks.

RAID0 is striping, not mirroring. If you've striped the two disks, there's no way to remove one of then without destroying your pool and losing all your data. If you have set up a mirror, you can offline one of the disks and use it however you choose. Your pool will continue, albeit in a degraded state. A failure of the remaining disk will result in loss of all your data.

Thanks, I do have setup a mirror. Futuremore, what do you mean offline one disk? Just pull out from the tray? And do I need to change some settings to disable the raid so I can use the offlined disk to expand the volume?

There's a button in the web GUI to take the disk offline; the manual describes how to do this. Are you wanting to convert your two-disk mirror (comparable to a RAID1) to a two-disk stripe (comparable to RAID0)? You should be able to do this without data loss, but I don't think there's a way to do it without the array being marked as degraded. And, of course, if either of the disks fails in a striped configuration, you will lose all your data.

I think you're right, and I've suffered data lost for two times because of failed disk. So I decide to buy new disk to expand the volume. Any way, thanks for your advice.

Be careful how you expand the volume, many people screw this up. Hopefully you have a backup of all your data before proceeding.

Glad it worked out for you without issue. Some folks just start swapping drives out and make a mess out of it.
