I have a ~2yo FreeNAS (now TrueNAS CORE) system. I started with 11.1 and most recently upgrade from 11.3 to TrueNAS using the 12.0 Stable release train. Ever since the upgrade, my CPU seems to be getting eaten up, with little recovery. I can get it back down to low usage if I reboot, but a few days later, its back up again. CPU Utilization chart with a few key points annotated:

CPU Usage.png

System details:
  • CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Gold G5420 CPU @ 3.80GHz
  • 32 GB ECC Memory
  • 4 x 6 TB WD Red HDD in RaidZ2
  • Jails: PLEX (manual install of latest), Unifi Controller (manual install of v5 controller), Homebridge (plugin)
  • Tasks: Backup subset of data to S3

Have a look here:

There are some suggestions about some jails making system calls further down the thread (last few pages) in a way that's not good.

Press J while top is running to see the jail ID, then use jls to get the JID of the jails to see if you can get a clue about which one it might be (although homebridge is certainly mentioned as one of the bad actors).
