HDD constantly making noise like the spindle is moving

Hi,

Building a new TrueNAS server and running 10 x 18TB disks.
When I first powered it all on one of the disks, (disk0) sounded a bit different to the rest so I took it back to the retailer and swapped it for another.
Installed it and all seemed ok.
Just finished running burn-in tests which took around 180hours and all reported 0 bad blocks.
Server has nothing on it at the moment, as the tests finished just before I went on holiday, so now I'm back and I power on the server and the disks sound fine but once it gets into TrueNAS I can hear the spindle on one of the disks rhythmically tapping away. Like, move thud, move thud, move thud, move thud, every few seconds.
I check and it's Disk0 again. I know it's Disk0 as I can feel the movement when I put my finger against the disk.
Plugins are installed on a separate pool.
The 10 disks have a pool created but no data on them.
Are all disks constantly moving and I just happen to hear Disk0, and I happened to get another possible faulty HDD?

I've just started new long SMART tests, 1524minutes to complete so will update the post once that's also finished. Now the rest is running I don't hear the usual noise, I can hear a little noise from one or more of the spindles but nothing that concerns me.

System:

CPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-13500
RAM: 32GB DDR (non-ecc)
OS Drive: 250GB Kingston NV2 PCIe M.2
Pool 1 Disks Raid-z2: 10 x 18TB Toshiba MG09 Enterprise NAS SATA HDD/Hard Drive 7200rpm
Pool 2 Disks Mirror: 2 x 500GB Kingston NV2 PCIe M.2

Reallocated_Sector_Ct = 0 on all drives
Current_Pending_Sector = 0 on all drives
Offline_Uncorrectable = 0 on all drives

At the moment all disks are silent having completed the SMART tests.

Shutdown the server, booted it back up and disks still silent...

Thanks Davvo,

I'd assume by default the system dataset is installed on the boot Pool, as it's the only thing that exists when the OS is installed.

Just checked and it's on the Plugins pool now, which explains why the disk are silent again.

I've not changed this setting so does TrueNAS randomly select a pool for the System Dataset?

Does it get randomly moved?

If I'm not wrong it gets created/moved on the first non-boot pool you create.

Not even during installation. The moment you create your first data pool, it switches over to it.

If you move it back to the boot-pool (after you've created your first data pool), it should stay there indefinitely, unless you change it manually.

How strange

All seems ok so far.
I'm currently copying data from the old server to the new server.
Will let you know if the continuous disk activity is still happening once the data copy finishes

Just to finish off the threat, disks are still silent so looks like it was the System Dataset Pool location.
