Hardware recommendations please

Hello everyone, noob here.
I want to build a NAS for storing and playback of music and movies. I know FreeNAS doesn't do streaming, that's fine, I will point XBMC to the NAS for that.
The thing is, I don't know where to start.
I have currently 4TB and I think I would double that in a year or so.
I want some kind of protection, I know a NAS does not replace backup, but a configuration that gives me a bit of a safe net is very welcome.
Silent and low power would be nice, if possible.
I don't know, anything else I might need to take into consideration?
