This will be my first FreeNas hardware build and looking to see if the parts I am putting together will work. I will be primarily using the NAS as a fileserver that will be loaded PICS / home movies and streaming videos, will be adding own-cloud as well. Redundancy and noise are my biggest concern. Thinking of going with Raid Z3.
Cyberjock, I have read your post on hardware recommendations, however would like other opinions. If there are any other parts you would recommend please post.

Here is my list:

Good choice.

Unless you receive a motherboard that already has the latest BIOS update, it probably will not boot with that CPU, and you would need to use an earlier CPU to get it to boot so that you could update the BIOS.
HDD 8 X 4tb TB Red Drives

The HGST 4TB drives are getting much better ratings at NewEgg (and at BackBlaze too, I think) than the WD Reds.

Most people here seem to be of the opinion that the power saving by using low-voltage RAM is just not worth it.

Looks like a primo build straight out of the hardware guide. Perfect. Great bang for the buck. What is there to say?

Z3 with only 8 drives is probably overkill. But if it makes you happy... so be it. For most it isn't necessary. I probably wouldn't look at z3 unless running 9 or 11 drives. But I'm not a fan even then, realistically you will have nearly 8x your gigabit bandwidth available in your pool... so it's not a real concern.

So z300M raised a few points. Memory I'd buy off Eric's list based on price and availability, you choice is fine. Many use the Reds here, I'm sure we could find Seagate lovers as well. I've seen them all fail but see fewer HGST's in the field to judge.

Good luck. Looks good.

Keep in mind that a raid, even a z3, IS NOT A BACKUP! (Sorry for those uppercases but most people don´t think about that.)
Better do only a more lightweight raid and do a backup! A thunderstorm can easily kill your complete raid! So do a offsite backup. But i have to admit, i am thinking about the best way to do offsite backup, i haven´t found out what is best in the freenas environment. At the moment i do backup on tandberg rdx with the tandberg data accuguard for rdx software. but you need a second pc for that.

If it wasn't for the extra heat/power being drawn by the HGST drives (7200RPM vs. 5400RPM of the WD Reds) I would've gone with HGST. Unfortunately for my build, temperature, noise and power usage were concerns so I went with WD Red.

Thank You all for your input.
Good catch on the CPU. I will go with the
Intel Xeon E3-1230V3 Haswell, 3.3GHz, 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1150, 80W Quad-Core Server Processor BX80646E31230V3.

From your experiences, is a cpu cooler required? What is your take on the Water/Liquid CPU Cooler?

Stock cooler is fine and quiet. These things rarely get a workout unless transcoding... and even then you have TONS of processor available. Don't sweat it
