GRUB error

Any thoughts on why a fresh installation onto a memory stick would boot properly on the laptop on which it was created, then crash out to GRUB rescue mode when i try to boot from it on the new (old - eBay) server I picked up?

Description:

Chassis: SuperMicro sc-933 3u 15 bay sata backplane

PSU: Two (2) 760W plus one (1) redundant. That's three power supplies.

CPU: 2x AMD Opteron 250 2.4GHz.

Motherboard: SuperMicro H8DAE rev. 1.11

RAID: LSI SATA 300-8X and a second (2nd) LSI 300-8X Controller. (That's two controllers).
Hard drive: none

Is it a BIOS or UEFI boot?
