Hello everyone

I am a new user of FreeNAS I build recently for my small business.

I was following the user guide and many posts found online and it is up and running.

The only thing it seems I cannot grasp would be email notifications.

"FreeNAS® provides an Alert icon in the upper right corner to provide a visual indication of events that warrant administrative attention. The alert system automatically emails the root user account whenever an alert is issued. FreeNAS® also sends a daily email to the root user which should be read in order to determine the overall health of the system."

It's been a few nights now and the FreeNAS box does not seem to want to contact me.

These are the steps I found and took so far:

1. http://scr.hu/1rd/0742i
network settings checked
2. http://scr.hu/1rd/it4x0
root email set

3. http://scr.hu/1rd/pherq
email settings checked

4. http://scr.hu/1rd/basml
test email sent successfully

5. http://scr.hu/1rd/5dx76
test email received

6. on top of all of that to my limited knowledge I was trying to find a cron job responsible for the task, I went through messages and other logs

Could you point me please into the right direction?

Regards
Marcin

OK, let's try to figure this out. I see you already tested mail root@<snip>.com. However, periodic actually calls mail root. So try to send an e-mail using mail root. It should use /etc/aliases to resolve root's email address.

Does sendmail augeaz@gmail.com work? I'm asking because mail is using sendmail to send mail. sendmail is actually this script: /etc/find_alias_for_smtplib.py. The script can do the alias expansion, however mail does it too, so I think when periodic sends a mail sendmail gets already called with the final address.

You can run mail -d root to get some debugging output (note: it will not send any mail when running in debug mode, it will just print the debug output).
In my case I get:
[PANEL]user = root, homedir = /root
Subject: test
test
EOT
Sendmail arguments: "send-mail" "-i" "root"[/PANEL]
