Release Notes for FreeNAS 9.1.0-RC2

This is the second release candidate for FreeNAS 9.1.0. We have passed a great alpha and rolling beta cycle with many bug fixes and regressions fixed. At this point, only bug fixes and regressions will be addressed.

Major changes:

1) Synced with version 9.1-STABLE of FreeBSD for many performance improvements, bug fixes, and updated software packages.

2) Many improvements to the ZFS filesystem, including feature flags, TRIM support, enhanced drive removal notification, LZ4 compression, improved ARC memory reclamation and reliability improvements.

3) New Plugin management interface, with support for direct uploading and easy browsing and installation of plugins a central FreeNAS plugin repository.

4) Improved Jail subsystem with support for multiple jails and an enhanced UI including enhancements from PC-BSD's Warden.

5) Improved Volume manager, including auto optimization of volumes for performance.

6) Improvements to the encryption subsystem.

7) Documentation enhancements.

8) **IMPORTANT** Backward compatibility of FreeNAS 9.1 ZFS pools with older versions of ZFS is not to be expected. Upgrade pools with extreme caution, as all ZFS pool upgrades are one-way and only FreeNAS 9.1, FreeBSD 9-STABLE, and FreeBSD 8.4 currently support this ZFS pool format.

9) To convert 8.* pluginjail to a 9.* pluginjail, please run the jail migration script like so (prior to configuring jails) from the command-line:

/root/migrate_pluginjail.sh -D

Any plugins installed will need to be updated manually; this can be done on the services->plugins page.

The bug tracker for FreeNAS is available at http://support.freenas.org

Discussion about FreeNAS occurs in the FreeNAS forums, located at: http://forums.freenas.org as well as in the official FreeNAS IRC channel on FreeNode in #freenas.

Can I just confirm that RC2 is only 307mb download.
And RC1 was 504mb download.

Iso download on both.
Just double checking as saving 200mb is a pretty feat.

Unfortunately my testing time is short lived.
I cannot install via CD.
As soon as it gets into the menu to Install/Upgrade the keyboard numlock goes out and keyboard is unresponsive.

Tried multiple usb ports...

The webpage wasn't updated until later yesterday. I too didn't find it on the webpage at 1:58PM (eastern time) so had to go to the sourceforge site. The plugin setup sure has changed. Now that I've played with it some, time to read the user guide to see how I should have set things up. I have only run this on my VM but for what I do with it, no real complaints yet.

Adding newer MB and double ram (32gb) on new build. Should I start with 9.1.0RC2 and import old volumes or stay with 8.3.1p2 ?

That's a personal choice. I stick with official RELEASE versions only on my servers. If I want to play with alpha/beta/RC I play with them in a VM or spare hardware.

If you are changing your MB, make sure you are getting something that supports ECC RAM! I will not try out the 9.1.0 on my real hardware until it's in RELEASE form as I don't want a hidden bug destroying my data. I run all this pre-release code in a VM.

Hello,

Is there a tentative release date yet? I am looking on moving from FreeBSD to FreeNAS and would rather just do the install/update once.

Haha. Nope. It's out when its out. Everyone asks this question every time we get to an RC.

Only install it once? Where is the fun in that :D.
We all wait while people test it out and fix bugs. There is no need to be in a hurry as many of us here can attest that when it's rushed, there are generally bug fixes released shortly after that could have been fixed beforehand. It could be a week to 2 months but I'll patiently wait.
