Hey!

first of all i want to say: I am overwhelmed by the community for FreeNAS. This is the main reason why i decided to now build my own NAS and not go with a standard solution. Great to see a community this active and helpful!

Why I build a NAS:
  • Smartphone photo+video storage (up to 10 phones)
  • Security camera footage storage (~5 cameras)
  • GIT-repos
  • Computer Backups (up to 10x Windows/Linux)
  • File Sharing

Before reading up on FreeNas and ZFS(bit rot) I wanted to build one beefy machine which does all of this in addition to running ZoneMinder (for the security cameras), some Virtual Machines, Plex etc., now I decided to seperate and build a NAS+server.

Now to my build:
NAS
Intel Pentium G3220 (0,00 €)
Prolimatech Samuel 17 CPU-Cooler (0,00 €)
Scythe Slip Stream Slim 120 mm Cooler 800 rpm (0,00 €)
Supermicro X10SLL+-F (210,00 €)
Fractal Design Node 304 (75,00 €)
2x SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16GB (20,00 €)
2x Crucial DIMM 8GB, DDR3L-1600, CL11, ECC (CT102472BD160B) (144,00 €)
Sea Sonic G-Series G-360 360W (60,00 €)
6x WD RED 4TB (6x165,00 € = 990,00 €) planning RAIDZ-2, so 16TB or 12,8 TB(80%)
total: 1.499,00 €
power usage: ~ 105W
(+ some UPS ~ 100,00-150,00 €)
OVERALL: ~ 1.650,00 €

All items labeled with 0,00 € are owned.

Now to my questions:
  1. What do you think of the separation of NAS + server?
  2. Is all the hardware compatible?
If something is unclear please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you a lot!

2. It's ok.
3. If you ask then you don't need encrypted pools (but, yes, these are two valid examples of encryption usage).
4. At first glance yes but check that the CPU/MB have the right socket and that the MB fits in the case just to be sure ;)

I agree with the 16 GB.

I wouldn't trust a be quiet! PSU for a server, especially as you can have a SeaSonic G-360 at around this price :)

Thank you a lot. I am currently on mobile, but I will change the PSU tomorrow.

Hey MtK,

i am using http://geizhals.de/. It compares prices for a lot of german vendors and if you save your build on a wishlist it calculates the least cost for it.
Also available for Austria
