Hello everyone,

First of all, thanks to this project and this awesome forum.
I'm new to the FreeNAS Scene and want your opinion about my upcoming build that i want to buy. I have zero experience with FreeNAS. Budget about 400-500€ without HDD's.

My planned parts:

1x ASRock C2550D4I
1x Crucial DIMM 8GB, DDR3L-1600, CL11, ECC (CT102472BD160B) (or maybe 2x)
1x Fractal Design Define R5 Black
4x WD Red 3TB (RaidZ2, with AES encryption)
1x PSU?
2-3x Silent FAN?

Thats my plan so far.
What this build should do:
Maybe a little Windows or Debian VM for Handbrake or Format Factory but not decided yet.
MiniDLNA(Or Plex?)and Sabnzbd are decided.
And hold important stuff.
The Jails go on a SSD (still mounting the Pool for storage, just for the logging part so the HDD's can spindown)

This build should be very silent so the HDD's should spindown after 10 minutes.
Also it should be low on power consumption.
What are your opinions about my build? What can I improve?

I appreciate every help!

Greetings

start with 16Gb of RAM, you wont regret it, the ASrock will do you good, but how many Plex streams are you expecting? PSU Seasonic's are popular

Just one maximal two at a time, but miniDLNA will do the job probably. I'm running Twonky at my actual NAS and it works fine. (Samsung TV).

I just find these PSU and I don't know if they are good/fit :
be quiet! TFX Power 2 300W Gold TFX12V 2.4
Sea Sonic SS-300TGW 300W TFX12V 2.31

Can you post a link of a Sea Sonic that fit's into my setup?

Start with 16GB of memory, don't use encryption unless you are OK with making it easy to lose your data, spinning down your disks cost you more in the long run. You end up replacing your disks sooner because of added wear and tear. My server with a xeon processor and 6 disks uses about 40watts. I doubt spinning down disks would get you much lower.

Thanks for your suggestion!
I try it without the spindown then. AFAIK it is about 2-3 watt per disk.
Well I'm not OK with losing my data so I won't use encryption then.

In which port should i plug the HDD's in, into the C2550 or the Marvell, and where are they on the board o_O

Changed the Fractal Design R4 to R5 because of some improvements in dust filter and silence.
Still not sure about the PSU.
Is 300 watt to much? is it cost-effective to use a PicoPSU?
I will not go over six HDD's so what is the best solution for this?

Thanks for your help so far!

Best power supply is seasonic 360watt. Pico's are not a good choice for a server.

I got my stuff together now but the Remote Console doesn't post at all.
Since VGA is disabled by default, I can't see anything, remote console says "cannot connect to x.x.x.x"
I see the temperatures and all other stuff, but I can't remote console...
Someone got a solution?

/edit: I made a bootable memtest86 USB Stick but nothing happens at all.
Well I can connect via SSL now, but the screen is full black (in JViewer)

Did a reset and now it works fine :)

(Cmos battery out - old power button 30 seconds without PSU plugged in - put only 1 RAM in top blue Slot)

Hello everyone,

my setup is working perfectly. Since the PSU only has four SATA Power ports, what should I do to add another two drives?
Adapter or replacing it?
