SATA port multipliers are not recommended and known to cause all sorts of trouble, specifically with disk drive identification.

But this is not your specific problem if you don't run SAS multipath.
If you need additional help you need to be more specific about that "expander card" and all details - model numbers, cabling, ... - of your setup.
