Sept. 16, 2018, 2:16 p.m. - The volume vol1 state is ONLINE: One or more devices has experienced an unrecoverable error. An attempt was made to correct the error. Applications are unaffected.

If I go to the disks tab all disks are healthy and everything is up and running fine. Where do I look? I have a debug log if this is the place to post it.

OK! So now use the techniques here to identify the drive that is suffering read/write errors.

I guess the first thing I would do is run SMART test on it to see what it reports.

Potentially reseat the cables on it and repeat the scrub.

Are you running any monitoring scripts to keep an eye on the health of your system?

Github repository for FreeNAS scripts, including disk burnin
https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...for-freenas-scripts-including-disk-burnin.28/

You also might want to look at this:

I also find this one handy:

PS. Definitely SSH into the system and run the command smartctl -a /dev/<device name> against the drive that is throwing the errors. It might be good to look at the others also. Then post it up here for us to look at too, if you don't mind.

The output should look something like this:
Code:
root@Emily-NAS:~ # smartctl -a /dev/da19
smartctl 6.6 2017-11-05 r4594 [FreeBSD 11.1-STABLE amd64] (local build)

You aren't running scheduled SMART self-tests (which you should, on all your disks), and the disk is failing the manually-initiated tests you've run. Sounds like it's dead, Jim.

I just noticed this. I do have smart set to run automatically but the service is failing. It gives me an error because it has been trying to run on my USB boot disks.

I've fixed that issue now by disabling smart for those drives and the service is now running.

Now shows in the GUI:
CRITICAL: Sept. 17, 2018, 1:56 p.m. - Device: /dev/da4 [SAT], 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

So it appears it's time to get out my spare disk and do a resilver I guess?

If the spare's been burned in, yes. Look into RMAing the old disk if it's still under warranty as well.

No burn in. Fresh in box. what should be my plan of attack?

I did grab that disk-burning.sh and used vi to put the script on my box.
Leave the volume as is and add this drive in and test first? I could also maybe setup a second test box I guess, but that is kind of a PITA.

I normally do the burn-in with a separate system for safety sake, and do it when I first get the drive, so it is ready to go when needed. If you do it in your live system, just be really certain which drive you are running the burn-in script against. Also, be sure to use tmux, use of which is covered in the insturctions that @danb35 pointed you at, because it allows you to detach from a session and then resume it later so you don't need to keep your desktop up with the terminal window open to the session while bad blocks is running. It takes some time.

@willrun4fun I put the power on hours into a calculator and it is just over two years, so it should still be in warranty.

Yep, was planning on calling WD on that.

I setup a test box since it only takes about 10 minutes to get a spare haswell box I had here ready to go. Most of the way through badblocks on the new drive this AM. I have a dentists appointment today so we will see how far I get.....

All burned in. Installed in the main nas and resilver is done. All green again. Fixed the SMART test to properly run on all HDDs and I'm good now.

Thanks!
