checksum errors after scrub on Zpool

I did a scrub on my volume yesterday, please see the results below. Particularly I am wondering about the checksum errors (81) on the one disk as shown. Does that mean I need to replace it?

I did a zpool clear and it went back to zero...

Further, FreeNAS GUI says the volume is "HEALTHY" after the zpool clear. I should have checked it before that, but I didn't...whoops...

It's a SATA II drive connected directly to 1 of the motherboard's SATA ports.

Yes, the checksum errors might be indicators for a bad drive.

To see SMART details, use:

You tried to access smart details for a partition (ada1p2).

To run a short or long SMART test on the device, use:

I'd run a long smart test on ada2. If not on the rest of the drives too. It's been my experience short smart tests don't really tell you much. I've had many drives pass a short test, but subsequently fail a long test.

I'd also probably rescrub the pool, if it were me. Just to be double sure there's no problems.

With single parity vdevs, you have to be extra careful. Consider if you had a drive failure (that wasn't ada2), before those checksum errors were fixed. Now during resilvering, the 81 checksum errors from ada2 show up. You have no more redundancy left to correct them. You've lost data somewhere. That's why raidz2 is recommended. You can be resilvering a drive, and still correct any other drive that happens to return bad data.

Yea, if I could do it again I'd definately pick Z2. Unfortunately now these things are so full, it'd be a nightmare to buy new drives, move all the data to those, create new RaidZ2 pool, then move all back. haha. Unless you know a secret way to "upgrade" to Z2?

What you could do, and I did this for a friend. Buy new drives, make a new RAIDZ2 and copy the data to them. Then destroy the RAIDZ1 and add those disks to the new zpool as a new vdev in RAIDZ2. Of course, you might want to buy an extra drive for the current RAIDZ1 for when it is "recycled" as a RAIDZ2.

Thanks Guys! I was having a similar problem with checksum errors on ada0 after rebuilding my freenas with 5 brand new WD Red NAS 2TB drives installed in a Z1 with a fresh rebuild onto 9.10 and a brand new pool. My best guess is possibly a power surge caused it? But I first noticed a problem when TimeMachine had trouble doing it's backups...all of the corrupt files were in my time machine share.

Anyways, using your direction above I deleted my entire time machine folder from Freenas to remove all the corrupt files...after I had backed up my machine to another drive first. I ended up replacing the SATA cable to ada0 just in case it was an issue with the cable. I ran short and long smart tests before and after I ran a zpool clear. After the zpool clear I ran another scrub and smart test and all of the checksum errors are now clear and all is well. Fingers crossed this was a fluke and I don't have a failing drive...I'm buying a new UPS as a result as a power surge is the only thing I can think of that would have caused the problem. This is a super important NAS as my 3 yo daughter can't live without her movies streaming off of Plex! LOL

Anyways, using your direction above I deleted my entire time machine folder from Freenas to remove all the corrupt files...after I had backed up my machine to another drive first. I ended up replacing the SATA cable to ada0 just in case it was an issue with the cable. I ran short and long smart tests before and after I ran a zpool clear. After the zpool clear I ran another scrub and smart test and all of the checksum errors are now clear and all is well. Fingers crossed this was a fluke and I don't have a failing drive...I'm buying a new UPS as a result as a power surge is the only thing I can think of that would have caused the problem. This is a super important NAS as my 3 yo daughter can't live without her movies streaming off of Plex! LOL

Did you burn in your drives? You don't just randomly get checksum errors.

have you had any more problems? I noticed a Checksum error after Time Machine would not back up as well. Before I go and replace the drive and regret doing z1 I would like to know if you are still error free.
