Hi there,

New to freenas and would like to build a freenas box. If there is such a thing, does anyone know what is the cheapest motherboard that will allow a hassle free install?

I care:
- About the data

I do not care:
- About speed
- About mobo durability
- About form factor
- About data encryption
- About hot swapping discs

You should use some part from an old PC with new drive, like WD RED! ;)

Something like a Dell PowerEdge T20 is dirt cheap and a good base to start from, at least you don't have to screw your components onto a piece of wood
Are you looking for new, used, refurbished components? Disks? Capacity? ...

You need something that reliably uses ECC i doubt any options would be called cheap...

Well if by "cheap" you mean something that's like $40 mainboard and $35 APU, no, you won't find that.

I guess that depends on how you define "cheap." The Dell PowerEdge T20 mentioned above starts at under US$200 for a complete (though diskless) system with 4 GB of RAM. Add an 8 GB stick and drives as desired, and you're good to go. To me, $250 + disks for a working server counts as cheap.

You alway can go to Ebay and search for some juicy ECC stuff, the x9 supermicro serie its a good start, pick one of many flavors and stick with it for your testing.

Plus the X9 stuff is very similar to the X10 and X11 stuff from a performance point of view, there haven't been major technological leaps since Sandy except for some bumps in memory speed, USB, and of course with Skylake the 64GB thing.
