Cannot reach update server (9.3 upgrade)

I'm running FreeNAS-9.3-STABLE-201605170422, and want to get up to 11.1 (need to upgrade some stuff running in old jails for compatibility, way past EOL at this point).

Reading around, seems the recommended path is 9.3 -> 9.10 -> 11.1. So I change my train to 9.10 in the gui, and get a "Update server could not be reached" popup after a bit. Clicking check now does the same thing. Going to the 11 train, same deal.

The update server noted in the gui is http://update.freenas.org/FreeNAS, in the console there is some error messages about 'Unable to load ['https://web.ixsystems.com/updates/ix_crl.pem']'

I can ping the outside web from the box, including update.freenas.org. The web.ixsystems.com address does not resolve.

I can't do a manual upgrade from 9.3 to 9.10 as far as I can tell. No signed tar support, as gui demands a checkum, but there no checksum available for the manual file that is available here https://download.freenas.org/archived/9.10/STABLE/9.10.2-U6/. This thread (https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/manual-upgrade-to-version-9-10-2-u1.49658/) and linked bug reports seem to indicate this path is not available.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Just make a backup of your config DB file, install 9.10 from the ISO file and load your config DB back in. It should be pretty painless. Just don't expect any jails to keep working. Once you are on 9.10, you should have no trouble upgrading to 11.1

Thanks Chris -

I was hoping to upgrade in place as I (perhaps incorrectly) understood that my old jails would work up to 9.10 at least. Then I could migrate them over after upgrade (creating new ones and moving some databases over). That's probably a naive assumption though. At least with an in place upgrade I could go back to my 9.3 config if anything was screwy.

So no way to get the upgrade in place working?

Thanks!

I had problems going from 9.3 to 9.10 because of the change to the underlying version of BSD. I had to recreate my jails when I made that switch, but I was able to keep my jails from 9.10 until now, with the exception of the VirtualBox jail that I had. It didn't work any more after going to FreeNAS 11.0, if I recall correctly.

Guys, you need to make that PEM work again... We have around a 100 hosts to solve in a weird way... using DNS trickery maybe..
